The Mustard Seed

I love how The Holy Spirit randomly shows us stuff. I’ve seen this verse many times, but I noticed something different and powerful.
The Mustard Seed
31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the SMALLEST of all seeds, but when it has GROWN it is larger than all the garden plants and BECOMES A TREE, so that the birds of the air come and make NESTS in its branches.” Matthew 13:31-32
First, the tree grows. This is a principle of kingdom. We never arrive, and are always becoming more and more like Jesus.
Yes. Even Jesus grew … Jesus went into the desert full of the Spirit, but came out of the desert 40 days later in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:1; Luke 4:14).
But, here is the mind blower. A mustard seed is really an HERB. It’s a plant, NOT a tree. Yet, it BECOMES a tree.
The mustard seed is the SMALLEST of all seeds, and as a seed, is meant to “just” be a spice or herb. Yet, the mustard seed grows, transcends, and transforms to become much greater than an herb or plant. Truly, this mustard seed becomes far larger than a garden plant in order to be a place of REST for those who seek refuge and a place to nest away from the world.
Folks. For a plant to BECOME a tree, it must FIRST take on a full-scale identity change in order to become greater.
Peeps. You were born into Adam, born into death and darkness. Yet, taking on our full identity in Christ, we choose to GROW as the seed that Jesus Himself has planted into the earth.
37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom” (Matthew 13:37-38).
Yes. Jesus is sowing exact replicas of Himself into the earth. We transform from death to life, from darkness to light, from self to selflessness, and from sons of disobedience to sons of the Kingdom.
In covenant with Christ, we are called to ALL Jesus did … and greater.
